About our Presenter:

Dr. Uldis Silins is a Professor of forest hydrology at the University of Alberta. His research over the past 20+ years has focused on impacts of wildfire and forestry operations on hydrology, water quality, and stream health in south-west Alberta front range and foothills watersheds.

Abstract:

Water security in Alberta faces growing pressure from disturbances such as more frequent and severe wildfires, flooding, and forest harvesting. Understanding how these disturbances influence water quality and aquatic ecosystem health is important for sustainable land and water management. This session will highlight findings from a study comparing the effects of three different forest harvesting strategies on streamflow, water quality, and aquatic ecosystem health. These will be briefly contrasted with those of severe wildfires and flooding on the same watershed attributes. Building on over two decades of monitoring through the Southern Rockies Watershed Project, this research aims to distinguish the effects of forest harvesting from those of natural disturbances on water quality. The findings aim to provide resource managers with science-based evidence to improve forest management in a changing climate.
