Abstract:

Wetlands are a vital part of Alberta’s managed forest ecosystems. They provide important ecosystem services such as carbon storage, water regulation and habitat connectivity. This webinar will highlight the Forest Management and Wetland Stewardship Initiative (FMWSI), led by Ducks Unlimited Canada in partnership with forest companies and the Forest Products Association of Canada, to advance wetland conservation through sustainable forest management. This session will share insights from all three phases of the FMWSI, demonstrating how the collaboration has translated science into practical tools and best management practices to conserve wetlands and waterfowl in forest management areas. Participants will learn how Initiatives 1.0 and 2.0 established guiding principles, practitioner resources, and training programs through knowledge exchange and field tours that have influenced planning and on-the-ground operations. Building on this foundation, FMWSI 3.0, launched in 2025, focuses on projects that foster on-the-land knowledge sharing, explore the role of wetlands in climate change adaptation and mitigation and wildfire planning and management, and develop training tools and resources to support resilient wetlands in managed forests.
