Forest Fire Acquisition & Mapping

Wildfires have a major impact on Alberta’s forests. In 2023, wildfires occurred in approximately half a million hectares of land across the province. This project assessed eight affected Forest Management Units (FMUs) across northern and southern Alberta using aerial imagery to understand the extent and impacts these fires had on Alberta’s natural resources.

This work was supported by West Fraser, Weyerhaeuser, Canadian Forest Products, Alberta Newsprint, Tolko Industries, Vanderwell Contractors, and Greenlink Forestry Inc, through fundings from the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA).
