About our Presenter:
Phil Comeau is an Emeritus Professor with the Department of Renewable Resources, University of Alberta. Phil taught Silviculture at the U of A for 20 years until “retiring” in 2020. During his career Phil has conducted research in Silviculture and Forest Ecology in B.C. and Alberta with a recent focus on silviculture options for boreal mixedwood stands and effects of vegetation management practices on plant community diversity and stand composition. Phil continues to be actively involved in the development and refinement of the Mixedwood Growth Model and its application in support of management decisions
Abstract:
Mixedwood stands are increasingly being explored as a management option for balancing productivity, resilience, and biodiversity under changing forest conditions. This webinar will highlight the long-term Judy Creek Mixedwood Experiment, established in 2002 in West Fraser’s Blue Ridge Forest Management Area. The study examines how different silvicultural treatments – including spot and broadcast treatments and pre-commercial thinning – affect spruce/aspen mixture development. This session will share insights from over two decades of monitoring and re-measurements, exploring treatment effects on stand growth, yield, and understory conditions. It will also touch on how microclimate and resource availability data are being used to better understand climate adaptation potential in mixedwood systems. These findings provide practical context to support silviculture planning and decision-making in Alberta’s lower foothills and central mixedwood regions.
